La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur and located right on the Sea of Cortez, is a premier resort destination, possessing boundless natural resources while maintaining an authentic small-town ambiance. La Paz (or “Peace” as it is appropriately named) is peaceful, unspoiled and inviting, providing a multitude of activities from relaxing strolls along its seaside waterfront to hiking up canyons or kayaking.

La Paz has quickly established itself as one of Baja’s ecotourism centers, with a wide variety of tours conducted by professionals dedicated to showing off local attractions while preserving the environment. The Sea of Cortez, referred to by Jacques Cousteau as the “world’s aquarium” and famous the world over for its biodiversity, provides countless possibilities for ecotourism activities, with a multitude of finback and blue whales, dolphins, sea lions and exotic fish. Favorite activities include sea kayaking, snorkeling, sailing and diving.

The Sea of Cortez also boasts a variety of protected islands, teaming with fauna and flora and ideal for diving, hiking or just relaxing on the sandy white beaches. The islands of El Espíritu Santo, La Partida and Los Islotes are popular destinations.

Tourists interested in gray-whale watching on the Pacific coast will find several tour operators working out of La Paz whose international airport is close to the famous lagoons where the gray whales give birth.

La Paz has been characterized as an excellent fishing destination and most tourists visit La Paz to do just that. The variety of fish to be caught in the waters near La Paz is wide and includes marlin, wahoo, tuna and mahi mahi (dorado). Boat rentals are available to suit every budget but, in general, are economical compared with other parts of Mexico.

La Paz also constitutes a favorite beach area for national and international visitors. The best beaches for swimming and sunbathing are found north of the city on the road to Tecolote. Beach lovers will enjoy paradises such as Playa Palmira, Playa el Coromuel, Playa el Caimancito, Playa del Tesoro, Playa Pichilingue, Playa Balandra, Playa Tlacote and Playa el Coyote.

The romantic seaside walkway also referred to as the malecón is the vantage point for stunning sunsets and early morning walks, while the ancient cave paintings in distant canyons provide a glimpse of centuries past.
