TRANSPORTATION
On The
BAJA PENINSULA |
HIGHWAYS -- There are 4-lane freeways
between (1) Tijuana & Mexicali, (2) Tijuana and Ensenada and (3) Cabo San Lucas and
the Los Cabos Airport. Most of Baja's other main highways are relatively narrow but very
drivable oiled roads. The oil surface is often thin and subject to becoming potholed.
Highway 1, the Transpeninsular Highway, is 1,057 miles in length.
AIRPORTS -- There are international airports at Tijuana, Mexicali,
Loreto, La Paz and Los Cabos.
FERRY ROUTES -- Large passanger-car ferries ply between Baja and the
Mexican mainland as shown on the map below.
ROAD LOGS -- The
Magnificent Peninsula guidebook contains over 3,100 miles of road logs. These
cover all of the main highways shown below plus many lesser secondary roads. These logs
are tied to easy to find kilometer markers as shown on the photos under Transportation in
the Photo Tour presented on the home page. The book is unique in providing a map showing
the nine sections into which these markers are divided. Without this guidance the traveler
can easily become confused. The book is also unique in its pointing out of natural and
historic features which are not readily apparant to the average traveler.
